HMRC launches new helpline for taxpayers affected by coronavirus
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has launched a new helpline to support businesses and self-employed people concerned about not being able to pay their tax because of COVID-19.
The helpline, which is now 0800 024 1222, follows a series of measures announced by the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, in his Budget to help UK businesses affected by coronavirus. It allows any business or self-employed person who is worried about being able to pay their tax due to coronavirus to receive practical help and advice.
For those who cannot pay their tax as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, HMRC will discuss your specific circumstances to look at:
- Agreeing an instalment arrangement
- Suspending debt collection proceedings
- Cancelling penalties and interest where you have administrative difficulties contacting or paying HMRC immediately
Up to 2,000 experienced call handlers will be available to support businesses and individuals when required. Opening hours for the new helpline are Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm, and Saturday 8am to 4pm.
