The Scottish alcohol industry is to be targeted by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) over the coming months as the department looks to crack down on tax cheats.

Indeed, the sector is among those to be studied by one of the department's taskforces, set up to help recover £4 million in lost tax revenues.

The department has launched 30 of these teams since May last year, undertaking intensive bursts of activity in high-risk trade sectors across the UK.

Jennie Granger, Director General Enforcement and Compliance at HMRC, noted that those evading tax will be caught.

"Anyone deliberately evading tax should watch out - HMRC is closing in on tax cheats," she explained.

"If you know anyone who is evading their taxes you can tell HMRC via the Tax Evasion Hotline by phone, on 0800 788 887, email or by post."

It comes after HMRC said in September that it would be targeting the motor trade north of the border in the future, too.
