80% of shoppers who used the services of local retailers during the coronavirus lockdown plan to continue to shop locally once the pandemic subsides.

That is according to a recent YouGov poll, conducted on behalf of trade organisation Co-operatives UK. Almost a third (30%) said they increased usage of local retailers since the COVID-19 lockdown on 23rd March, as shoppers sought the convenience and choice afforded by local stores.

The survey also suggests a shift in attitudes by consumers amid the coronavirus crisis. More consumers have grown increasingly wary of food waste, with 35% of respondents confirming they have been planning meals throughout the week to limit food waste. Four-fifths (82%) of those meal planning intend to do so once the lockdown eases too.

Since the end of March, 75% of respondents said they had significantly reduced their travel. Almost a third (31%) said they would look to continue this even after restrictions are lifted, putting their faith in local businesses and communities to help them flourish.

A café in Preston, The Larder, is a heart-warming example of the way that local communities have come out in support of one another. The café, which closed its doors at the start of lockdown, sought volunteers on social media to help the café cook and deliver free meals to some of the most vulnerable residents in the café’s vicinity.

40 volunteers put their names forward within 24 hours, allowing the café to give thousands of meals, recipes and ingredients kits to families in Preston.

Kay Johnson, owner of The Larder, said: “The café was set up last year to serve the community and we couldn’t sit and watch people that we knew needed support be left to fend for themselves.

“I was absolutely overwhelmed by the wave of support from volunteers and how much we’ve been able to do in such a short time.”

Nick Matthews, chair of Co-operatives UK, says that the coronavirus pandemic has helped reinforce the value of independent businesses.

“It’s heartening to see that the public has seen the benefit of shopping locally, reducing food waste, increased recycling and exploring their local area,” said Matthews.

“Buying from independent businesses such as co-ops means creating local jobs and supporting organisations who put strong values at the heart of all that they do.”
