Your Unique Taxpayer Reference number (UTR number) is a 10-digit number that can be found on documents from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), such as:

  • Your previous tax return(s)
  • Notices to file a tax return
  • Your payment reminders

If you cannot find your UTR number and you are self employed or in a partnership, the simplest and quickest way to find this information is to use the HMRC App or your Personal Tax Account.

HMRC has also produced this video to show how to find your UTR using the HMRC app.

You can request your UTR number from the Self Assessment Helpline but please note that HMRC cannot give you your UTR over the telephone for security reasons and it may take up to 15 days for it to arrive by post, or longer as the self-assessment tax return deadline gets closer.

If you have lost your UTR number and you are a limited company, you will need to request your Corporation Tax UTR using the online form here.

Read our FAQ here on what is a UTR number.
