You make Class 2 National Insurance contributions if you’re self-employed to qualify for benefits like the State Pension.

Historically, Class 2 was paid periodically throughout the tax year. But from April 2015, it was decided that it should be collected through the self assessment process and the submission of your tax return.

So Class 2 is still payable- but the deadline for payment is not be until January 2017 and it will be payable with the rest of your tax bill. Whilst this is some way off, it will add £145.60 (£2.80 x 52 weeks) to your 2015/16 tax bill so please make sure you are putting enough aside.

It is possible to pay your Class 2 National Insurance by instalments by setting up a Budget Payment Plan with HMRC.

If you have any queries regarding Class 2 National Insurance or any other aspect of your tax affair, please feel free to contact your local TaxAssist Accountant who would be happy to help.
