PAYE payment deadline
The deadline for employers to make PAYE payments to HMRC is 22nd of each month. For December 2024 this falls on a Sunday. Employers must therefore ensure that their PAYE/NI payment clears HMRC’s bank by Friday 20th December.
Paying new employees correctly
Taking on a new employee involves a lot of tasks, including getting all the information to make sure you pay them correctly. Follow these steps to avoid mistakes during the onboarding process.
- Ensure you get accurate personal information and double check it against official documents (passports, driving licence and recent utility bills)
- Full name
- Date of birth
- National Insurance number
- Bank account details
- Find out about previous employment to ensure you use the correct starter declaration code and tax code. If your new employee does not have a P45, use the online starter checklist to find the appropriate codes.
Dealing with leaving employees
When an employee decides it’s time to leave it may come as a shock. Handling it professionally will ensure the process is smooth and keep your other employees motivated. Read our guide What to do when an employee leaves to find out more.

Christmas - payments to employees

Christmas gifts and parties
Gifts that meet certain conditions are exempt from tax and NIC for both employees and employers. This includes non-cash gifts that don’t exceed £50 per employee. You can read more in our guide to staff gifts and parties.
Employee hours reporting on hold
Plans requiring employers to report employee hours and dividends paid to directors on Real Time Information (RTI) reports from April 2025 are on hold. The requirements will be delayed until at least April 2026, with further updates to follow.
Fair tipping now in effect
From 1st October 2024, new tipping legislation is in effect. The legislation confirms details on how tips should be allocated and paid to employees.
