If you do not usually send a tax return, but circumstances mean that you now do, you must register for self-assessment by 5th October after the tax year you have income that needs reporting.

If you started to receive income between 6th April 2023 and 5th April 2024, you should notify HM Revenue and Customs by registering for self-assessment before 5th October 2024.

How you register for self-assessment depends on your circumstances. If you are not self-employed but need to register for self-assessment, you can use form SA1. To complete the registration process, you will need personal details such as name, address, date of birth and your National Insurance number.

The SA1 form can be competed online, or you are able to print the post and post this to HMRC.
